CELEBRATE GOOD BOOKS, COME ON!

Those who know me know I don’t pay particular attention to these National Observance days. There’s too many to track, over 2,100 according to the National Observance Day website << https://nationaldaytoday.com >>. I’ll do the math for you…that averages almost 200 per month! Works out to be about six per day! More than enough to drive a woman to drink…more!

Of course, my lack of attention means I’ve been known to miss the big ones, like National Son’s Day, or National Mutt Day. But since we celebrate those every day at Casa Ormerod, no need to feel guilty about not giving a social media shoutout every time these important dates roll around.

There’s another National Observance Day on the horizon that I also celebrate every single day, but thought it’s time for the rest of the world to show it a little more love. So today I’m dedicating my blog to raising awareness of this little known but very important day.

August 9. Draw a big red circle around that one.

What’s the big deal? Why, it’s National Book Lover’s Day. The day people are encouraged to—you may want to sit down for this mind-blowing revelation—take time to read a story! You mean that there are people out there who do NOT read every day? Boggles the mind. We now have to dedicate one day per year to urge people to put away their TV remote and take their eyes off their social media accounts to escape into another world. Go anywhere, be anything! Leave the politics and sticky-life issues away. If only for an hour.

And if you and I are kindred spirits in that we do open a book every day, might I suggest making this a truly special day by kicking the celebration up a notch. Spoil yourself silly by reading while soaking in a bubble bath, a split of champagne and plate of Belgian chocolate-covered strawberries at the ready. Now that’s a true celebration of National Book Lovers Day!

I got to wondering, as I often do, how exactly does one go about declaring a National Day of Observance? Fell kind of deep into that rabbit hole there, but in summary, anyone can declare a National Day of whatever they like and put it out there on social media. The concept is not copyrighted. It’s that easy—and a common marketing gimmick. But in order to get it on the aforementioned National Day Today calendar, you have to submit and be approved. Can you believe the doorkeepers there receive over 10,000 requests a year? Many are personal, asking for things like a National Day of Suzie. Interesting way to show your love for a person, huh? Yeah, probably not going to happen. Out of all those requests, they’ll take 20 to 25 per year.

Armed with this new-found knowledge, I am going to ask you to indulge me a minute while I declare today, July 30, 2021, National To-Fetch-A-Killer Cover Reveal Day! Yes, you saw it here first. The cover for the latest in the Mutt Mysteries series, which will be officially on sale August 18--you might want to mark your calendar for that day, too!

Bottom line, there are SOOOOO many things worth celebrating in this world. Please do so responsibly! Maybe with a glass of wine. Cheers!
